Sunflower Redevelopment, LLC has plans for a mixed-use real estate development including 2,000 acres for Johnson County Parks and Recreation use, 12 acres for City of DeSoto use and 30 acres for the City of DeSoto’s school district, 342 acres for a Kansas State University research park, 300 acres for a University of Kansas research park, a 250 acre private research park and 6,000 acres for private residential, retail and office development. The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant is a former Government-owned, contractor-operated military installation located in DeSoto, KS. The installation began operations in 1942. The primary operational mission of the installation was to manufacture smokeless powder and single, double, and triple-base propellants. Additional facility operations included manufacture/regeneration of nitric and sulfuric acids and munitions proving. Since 1971, the majority of the installation has been in a standby, inactive status. The majority of the industrial infrastructure remains at the site. The 9,065-acre site is located between Lawrence, KS and Kansas City, MO, along the Route 10 corridor, near to Interstate 35 and Interstate 70, 26.5 miles from Kansas City, MO. Littleton, Colorado - Sunflower Redevelopment, LLC, a joint venture between International Risk Group, LLC and Kessinger/Hunter & Co. LLC, was awarded a $109,000,000 requirements-type contract with delivery orders for the environmental remediation and explosives decontamination of 9,065 acres of land formally known as Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant in Johnson County, Kansas. The United States Congress enacted legislation in October 2004 authorizing the Army (in consultation with the General Services Administration) to complete transfer of Sunflower to an entity selected by the Johnson County Board of Commissioners: Sunflower Redevelopment, LLC. Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant was established in 1941 as the world’s largest powder and propellant plant, later playing a historic role providing munitions during World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. The ammunition plant is now an excess property. Sunflower Redevelopment, LLC, will perform the work at the former ammunition plant’s site with planned completion by Dec. 13, 2012.
